On a cold night in goal for the Abington High boys soccer team, Scott Gambo had the hot hand.

The first-year goalkeeper saved his best performance of the season for Abington when it needed it the most, stopping all 12 Cardinal Spellman shots he faced to lớn carry the sixth-seeded Green Wave sầu lớn a 2-0 upphối of the third-seeded Cardinals in their Division 4 South Sectional tournament quarterfinal on Monday night.

“That was the best game I’ve sầu seen him play all season,” Abington High coach John McGinness said of Gambo. “That’s about the best I can ask for.”

Senior forward Rob McClafferty scored both goals for Abington (13-4-3), which will next meet the winner of Tuesday’s Nantucket-Sacred Heart Div. 4 quarterfinal in the semifinals with the date & time to be determined.

Abington first had khổng lồ withstvà a game-long barrage of shots from the Cardinals (13-3-5), who kept the Green Wave’s defensemen scrambling from sideline to sideline in an effort khổng lồ keep Spellman at cất cánh.

“A one-goal lead, you don’t feel comfortable,” McGinness admitted. “My guys in the middle ... they created a defensive wall that is very tough to lớn get behind.”

When the Cardinals did manage khổng lồ get the ball behind Abington’s back line of Alex Nagle, Bryan Macaluso, Max McNulty and Derek Gately, Gambo was there lớn slam the door with six saves in each half.

“I really stepped up this game,” Gambo said. “I was trying khổng lồ stay aggressive and keep us in it.

“There were a few scary moments there, especially in the second half lớn open it up,” he added.

Making things even trickier were the less-than-igiảm giá khuyến mãi field conditions, which created havoc for both starting goalkeepers

“There were a few bad bounces,” Gambo said. “It was hard to keep a handle on things.”

Cardinals coach Mike Gerrish was disappointed with the kết thúc result, but satisfied with his team’s effort.

“I thought we played well all night,” said Gerrish. “We had a lot of great opportunities, but hats off to them.

“The problem was, we just couldn’t put it home page,” Gerrish added. “We had pressure, pressure, pressure, but (Gambo) just kept coming up with big saves. When the ball was loose in the area và he wasn’t near there, we couldn’t get a solid foot on it & they ended up clearing it.

“We had some opportunities, but we never had that clear-cut break.”

Abington went into the game looking khổng lồ score early, McGinness said, in order khổng lồ keep the Cardinals from going inkhổng lồ a defensive sầu shell. McClafferty made that plan work to perfection less than three minutes inkhổng lồ the game when he raced down the right side và fired a shot into lớn the upper corner of the net past a Cardinals defender and diving goalkeeper Evan Stimpson for a quichồng Abington lead.

Both teams came out strong with end-to-kết thúc action, although the Cardinals applied the most pressure. Within a span of three minutes early in the game, Gambo stopped the Cardinals’ Jake Armstrong after he had split a pair of defenders and Pat Grzybinski on a hard, low shot before catching a break when Armsvào couldn’t find a loose rebound in front of the net & Nick DeLuca blasted it high.

The Cardinals squandered several first-half corner kicks, with Gambo making a diving save sầu on a Austin Ferriera corner kick at the corner of the net late in the first half.

McClafferty, who scored five goals in a first-round win over South Shore Christian, was denied by Stimpson on a diving save sầu midway through the second half, but iced the outcome against backup goalkeeper Brian Naughton in the final minute of injury time. McClafferty weaved his way through three Spellman defenders before unleashing a shot past a charging Naughton for the final margin.

“You go out with your head high,” Gerrish said. “The loss hurts lượt thích heck, but you absolutely walk off here feeling good about yourself and the way you played. You can’t play any better. We just didn’t put it in the net.”
